62 Classical rhetoric, secular literary critical theories, biblical literary studies together with form criticism were components that made up the background for his proposal. 63 Cf. G. von Herder, Vom Geist der ebräischen Poesie 1 & 2 (1827), which is an early example of the study on the “inner spirit” of ancient Hebrew poetry. What Muilenburg labelled “rhetorical criticism” had also earlier been done in the literary tradition of R. G. 4. in this study. introduction 23 investigation. I will therefore in the following chapters make a closer analysis of Isa 18:1–7, and this will, hopefully, shed some light on what appears to me as a somewhat overlooked text in the book of Isaiah. 3. Method Before the detailed analysis of Isa 18 can start, it is necessary to make some methodological considerations. This entry contains four parts that all deal with methodological issues. Isa 18 is a rhetorical composition, and my aim is to see how the chapter is designed in order to persuade an audience.

I am aware that I can never discern exactly what the text meant for the first listener or reader of Isa 18, neither can I be sure of what the author intended. All interpretations that aim at tracing the historical meaning(s) are hypothetical by nature, and can never be other than possible suggestions of meaning(s). What one can do, however, is to describe what is perceived by the modern reader as the text’s meaning, and try to get as close as possible to an historical meaning. My emphasis lies therefore on reader’s meaning and textual meaning, with an emphasis on the latter.
