In earlier times, we would have found textbooks recommending that teachers, like all speakers, should specifically plan each and every gesture ahead of time. Those earlier textbooks also would have suggested that specific gestures would always be interpreted in very specific, predictable ways. Fortunately, the theories underlying such assertions have long since been found to be faulty.

In the research conducted prior to writing this book, we contacted award-winning professors and K–12 teachers in various disciplines and asked them to comment on their use of acting skills in the classroom. Their testimonials, which are included in Appendix 2, Testimonials from Award-Winning K–12 Teachers and Professors, testify to the value of teachers’ incorporation of acting skills in their classrooms. An English teacher agrees that acting skills “can be useful in engaging students in the course and focusing their attention on the major ideas or problems of a discipline” (Carroll, testimony 4).

The recommendation here, as in the other areas of physical animation, is simply to be sensitive. Know what message your body may be conveying in those few moments, and ask yourself if that is your intended message for the class. See Chapter 12 for a more extended discussion of entrances and exits. 1 Meaningful Use of Gestures Note that all of the previous recommendations are suggestions for behaviors that may be beneficial to the teacher aspiring to do a more successful job of holding the students’ attention and motivating them.
