In order to examine penetration resistance of various glasses under ballistic impact condition, many researchers have conducted controlled impact experiments. For example, Behner et al. measured failure front dynamics in borosilicate glass under gold rod impact and penetration. The dynamic failure wave front and rod penetration depth are measured simultaneously using high speed photography and flash X-rays. Nie et al. measured the dynamic strength of borosilicate glass under combined compression and shear loading using Split-Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) technique.
Because of all these drawbacks and because adhesion plays a key role in the performance of safety glass, the need for nondestructive test methods for the evaluatiodcharacterization of adhesive bond strength in laminated safety glass is apparent. Recently, Hou and Reis". used energy velocities to estimate adhesive bond quality in laminated safety glass. The purpose of this study is to investigate the use of attenuation measurements to evaluate adhesive bond quality in laminated safety glass. SURFACE CHARACTERIZATION The interfaces between the plastic interlayer and the two adjacent lass plates are modeled as imperfect interfaces via the use of a bed of longitudinal and shear springs'%.
