Life on the Mississippi can be categorized as a book primarily concerned with life on the river as experienced on a steamboat—that was Twain’s intention. But he loved all river craft. So we also see that Huckleberry Finn is a book concerned with other modes of water transportation. In that novel Twain included steamboats, flatboats, and rafts, large and small. And let’s not forget that he also included an exciting raft scene in Chapter 3 of Life on the Mississippi—which itself was originally a part of Chapter 16 of Huckleberry Finn—in which he described these massive floating workshops.
